Photodynamic Therapy (PDT)

Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) is a non-invasive treatment that combines light-sensitive medications with specific light wavelengths to selectively eliminate abnormal or cancerous cells, as well as pathogens or damaged tissues. This precision therapy offers targeted effects with minimal damage to healthy tissue—ideal for dermatological, oncological, and antimicrobial use.

At GS Medical Services, we partner with leading integrative and specialized clinics worldwide to deliver customized PDT protocols grounded in medical evidence and patient safety.

How PDT Works

  1. Photosensitizer administration: A medication (e.g., aminolevulinic acid [ALA], porfimer sodium) is applied topically, taken orally, or administered intravenously. It accumulates preferentially in abnormal cells.

  2. Light activation: After an absorption period (usually 1–72 hours), light (laser or LED) is directed at the treatment site to activate the photosensitizer.

  3. Reactive oxygen production: Activated compound produces reactive oxygen species (ROS) that destroy target cells and damage blood vessels feeding tumors.

  4. Immune stimulation: PDT also stimulates the immune system to clear damaged cells and may aid infection control.

  5. Outpatient procedure: Typically performed in 1–2 sessions, often without hospitalization.

Clinical Applications of PDT

  • Skin conditions & precancers: Actinic keratosis, basal-cell carcinoma, Bowen’s disease

  • Cancer treatments: Early-stage lung, esophageal, bladder, head & neck tumors; cutaneous T‑cell lymphoma.

  • Dermatology & cosmetic indications: Severe acne, psoriasis, photoaging, rosacea, fungal and bacterial skin infections.

Benefits of PDT

  • Targeted & minimally invasive: Preserves healthy tissue, avoids surgery and scarring.

  • Flexible & repeatable: Can be administered multiple times with consistent outcomes.

  • Faster recovery: Quicker healing and fewer hospital visits.

  • Stimulates immune response: Enhances antitumor and antimicrobial actions.

  • Cost-effective: Often less expensive than surgery or radiation therapy.

Safety & Side Effects

  • Local irritation: Post-treatment redness, swelling, stinging, or blistering—usually resolves in days to weeks.

  • Light sensitivity: Skin and eyes may remain photosensitive for 1–6 weeks; avoiding sunlight and wearing protection is essential.

  • Organ-specific effects: When treating internal sites (lungs, esophagus), possible mild coughing or sore throat—typically temporary.
