Insulin Potentiated Therapy (IPT)

Insulin Potentiated Therapy (IPT) is a controversial adjunctive treatment primarily used in cancer care and some chronic conditions. By administering insulin to induce mild hypoglycemia—then following it with low-dose chemotherapy or other medications—IPT aims to enhance drug uptake in target cells while reducing toxicity. However, it remains unproven and not supported by major oncology guidelines.

How IPT Works

  1. Insulin administration induces hypoglycemia.

  2. Low-dose chemotherapy is administered during hypoglycemia, intending to increase drug uptake by cancer cells (via increased membrane permeability and insulin sensitivity).

  3. Glucose is infused to restore normal blood sugar.

  4. The process is outpatient, under medical supervision.

Clinical Applications

  • Cancer: breast, prostate, lung, pancreatic—used in resistant or late-stage disease.

  • Chronic & autoimmune conditions: Lyme disease, MS, lupus, ulcerative colitis—based on anecdotal use; lacking clinical evidence.

Benefits & Limitations

Potential Advantages

  • Reduced chemotherapy doses may mean fewer side effects.

  • Some providers report improved quality of life.

Risks & Concerns

  • Hypoglycemia can be dangerous, causing headache, delirium, or worse.

  • Evidence is limited—only small trials and case reports.

  • Some studies suggest insulin may inadvertently promote tumor growth or reduce chemotherapy efficacy.

  • Not covered by insurance—costly and outpatient duration may be long (up to 4–6 hours).

Safety & Side Effects

  • Closely monitored hypoglycemia, managed with sugar infusions.

  • Mild side effects include sweating, fatigue, hunger, or headache.

  • Serious risks: drug resistance from low chemotherapy dosing; insulin–cancer growth concerns; reports of ethical and licensing issues among practitioners
